I hate to break it to you… there is no easy answer, or quick fix. Motivation is personal! Everyone has their own dreams and aspirations. Even if we had the same dream… for example, my dream is to run a sub-2 hour half marathon, my reason for this dream would most likely be very different from yours.
Though it is very personal there are nine tips that I have used to stay motivated. Some of these may work for you, and some might not. So it’s time for you to go shopping and choose which ones are right for you.
Mindset – As you know, I am a runner. About two months ago I had a conversation with my husband, and now every time I consider NOT going for a run, that conversation comes to mind. He asked me “What would an athlete do?” It was kind of a slap in the face for a moment, but then I realized his point. In order to achieve great things as a runner, I have to train like an athlete. What kind of mindset do you have?
Outcome – What do you want to achieve? Take the time and set out your goals, and be sure they are S.M.A.R.T goals (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound). Having clear outcomes in mind will help you maintain the focus you need to achieve great things.
Thrilling – Those goals should also be thrilling! You need to be EXCITED about what you are working towards. What will make you jump out of bed in the morning? Or leap off the couch at the end of the day? Thrilling goals are a great way to push yourself further than even you thought you could go!
Ignore – One of the biggest road blocks in your path is YOU! Learn to ignore that negative voice in your head… it’s just full of excuses anyways.
Visualization – When things get tough visualize yourself at the end, having achieved your dreams and aspirations. How does it feel? Now use that feeling to drive you forward!
Attitude – It is so important to have an “I CAN” attitude. Replace those negative thoughts that you have learnt to ignore with positive “I CAN” statements. You are your biggest cheerleader!
Team – Surround yourself with like-minded people, people who understand your dream. They can be a great source of motivation. But more importantly… they can be your accountability partner, someone to hold your feet to the fire when things get tough!
Enthusiasm – Enthusiasm comes from within. You have to really WANT what you are looking to achieve. Be enthusiastic!
Dedication – Fully commit yourself… Failure is not an option! Dig deep inside and find the real reason behind your dream, this is where commitment lives!
